I saw a phrase circulating recently on X that said:
“I don’t know what I think until I write it down.”
I learned a little later that it was attributed to Joan Didion, but if I’m being honest, that wasn’t my primary focus. I was completely engaged by the discussion of writing (plus walking reading) as a method of not just creation, but of clear-headedness.
The discussion was very timely for me. I’ve often wanted to write but have found myself bogged down in the slog of research or focus on an end product — specifically op-eds, which are usually capped between 600 to 800 words.
It just so happened that I’d been juggling an idea to launch a publication of my own as a way of exploring topics tangential to my work or completely out of left field. Now I get to pull the trigger.
The title Daring Greatly was pulled from Theodore Roosevelt’s Citizenship in a Republic speech (colloquially known as Man in the Arena). My friends might groan at this given my incessant invoking of the former President, but at least I pulled a different quote from the thing!
I’m interested in writing about policies that push the envelope and interviewing the people who are behind them. I have no illusion of this being a professional publication of any sort — I want to explore solutions freely, without prejudice or an eye towards an end product.
Here’s what I’m aiming for:
Ideally something new once per week. On any given week, however, my content could take the form of:
An interview, with transcripts — most likely covering a niche policy or experience.
A book review or book annotations.
Opinion or long(er) form pieces.
This is basically all for me though — a way to categorize my thoughts, interests, or keep track of my reads. Feel free to hop in for one piece and dip out again. If you like what I’m doing, well, tell me. I won’t say no to an ego boost. You could always start with a subscription.
